Runescape is a nostalgic classic. Most of us probably play this game with our parents' huge '00s computers and dodgy dial-up internet - but for some recent Venezuelan gamers, it's a different story. Back in 2018, Kotaku reported that some players in the country were growing gold by bypassing the OSRS gold game's controversial real-world trading rules. According to a player calling himself “Fhynal,” mining gold on Runescape has proven to be safer than getting a job in Venezuela.
"I grow gold mainly for its original benefit," he told Kotaku. "I don't have to go out. It may sound weird, but we live with a lot of crime. If you want to go out, you have to use the bus, [which increases your] propensity to be robbed."
Fhynal said he earns about $19 to $26 a week from Runescape, which adds up to "double and sometimes triple" the average monthly salary in Venezuela.
